What Is WAN, and
Why Does It Matter?
A Wide Area Network (WAN) is a private telecommunications network that connects several Local Area Networks (LANs). A LAN is a group of computers and network devices that are connected to one another, and the router connects the WAN with LANs. The WAN allows people to have shared access to communal resources. WAN connections use either wired or wireless technologies to establish contact. WANs using wired technology are still popular for most businesses, but wireless technologies are also gaining momentum.
But How do You Choose Between Wired and Wireless Connectivity?
…That’s where we come in.
While wired connectivity gives you more security and greater control, wireless technology gives you more freedom and flexibility. However, wired technology takes longer to install, whereas wireless is quickly installed. Then again, wired options are less expensive but include software costs, and wireless is more expensive but doesn’t require additional software. As you can see, with all of these differences, it really comes down to your specific situation and what you’re trying to accomplish.
